George Eliot Academy Celebrates Mylo Newell’s England Ice Hockey Success

George Eliot Academy is celebrating the outstanding success of Year 8 pupil Mylo Newell, who has represented England in the U13 national ice hockey team, served as assistant captain, and helped secure a gold medal after five consecutive wins at the international Turkuturnaus tournament in Finland.

George Eliot Academy is incredibly proud of Year 8 pupil Mylo Newell, who has recently represented England in ice hockey and served as assistant captain during his fourth international tour this April.

Mylo, who balances his academic studies with an impressive training schedule, was selected for the England U13 national squad and travelled to Finland for the prestigious Turkuturnaus competition. The team delivered an outstanding performance, winning five out of five games and securing a gold medal.

Alongside this remarkable achievement, Mylo was also chosen as assistant captain - a reflection of his dedication, leadership and exceptional work ethic both on and off the ice.

Mylo trains three times a week at his local rink and continues to work hard towards his dream of playing at the highest level. His commitment has not gone unnoticed by his family, coaches and staff at George Eliot Academy.

Mylo’s mother, Becky, shared her pride:

“We are incredibly proud of Mylo for being selected for the England U13s ice hockey team. It is an incredible achievement, and one he has trialled hard for. For him to receive the assistant captain badge and be part of the leadership team was an honour and he wore his badge with pride.”

Reflecting on the experience, Mylo said:

“It was an honour to be assistant captain for the U13s England Ice Hockey team. I have worked so hard in my trials and the hard work paid off. Me and my team won five games out of five, which meant we won the gold medal in the Turkuturnaus tournament in Turku, Finland.

I want to thank my coaches from my home club Solihull Junior Barons and all of the coaches, managers and medic from England ice hockey who have all put in lots of hard work to make these dreams happen.”

Mylo’s form tutor, Kathleen Johnson, added:

“This is a fantastic achievement and a great example of what hard work, focus and perseverance can deliver. Not only are we happy that Mylo is excelling in something he enjoys so much, but we are also pleased to see how he displays these same attributes in school and in his studies. He should be very proud of himself.”
